The Learning Center is both virtual via Google Meet and in person at Ruxton Towers, the same building as Positive Changes Counseling Center. The Learning Center can be found on the first floor, Suite 115.

We use a HIPAA compliant version of Google Meet for our on-line groups.

For groups being offered in-person, we follow CDC's recommendations to insure participants' and facilitators' safety and health.  Each group will be limited in size.  All participants are required to wear a mask while in the building and during the group sessions. Thorough sanitation as well as air purifying measures are in place. Participants will be asked to complete a 4 question form and take their forehead temperature prior to the start of each session.

Information describing each group is below.  What the group is about; who the group is geared to; a little bit about the therapist who will be facilitating the group as well as the day and time of the group is included.  To register for any of the groups, press the "register" button" at the end of each group's description.

Facilitators will contact registered participants prior to the start of the first session. For virtual groups, the email address used when registering will be the email address where a special Google Meet invitation will be dispatched. Only that email address will be able to access the virtual group. Should you need to make a change to that address, please contact us after registering.

For what age is this intended?

Kindergarten through 2nd graders

Detailed group description

Participants will work on identifying and verbalizing their own feelings as well as recognizing feeling in others in this IN PERSON SMALL GROUP . The participants will learn and practice social skills strategies that can assist them in making and maintaining healthy peer relationships. Social skills they will learn include noticing nonverbal cues; extending conversations; standing up for oneself and good sportsmanship. Sharon and Gio use games, stories and fun activities to encourage participants to make friends and become more confident. This group accepts all insurances. All social distancing protocols and safety procedures will be enforced.

Sharon is an experienced facilitator and child/family therapist who enjoys working with children to encourage positive social skills, development of self- confidence and teaching problem solving. As a mother of five, and a former family day care provider, Sharon is familiar with challenges children face navigating their world. COVID has increased these challenges and Sharon looks forward to combining her life experiences and clinical skills to provide a bright spot in the week for your child.

For what age is this intended?

3rd graders through 5th graders

Detailed group description

Children in this age group love being in a club, forming new friendships while working on a common goal. In this IN PERSON small group, participants will be able to increase their self-awareness and empathy as they learn problem solving strategies; how to negotiate conflicts with peers; teamwork and kindness. Sharon incorporates fun, creative activities that encourage the strategies the participants learn can be helpful in forming friendships while being a good team member. This group accepts all insurances. (All social distancing protocols and safety procedures will be enforced).

Detailed group description

Essential social skills help young children prepare for a lifetime of friendships and learning. Join Audrey for a play based group that provides young children a chance to learn and practice sharing, turn taking, social communication, and coping with big feelings. Using social stories, games, and play Audrey will assist your child in building these essential social skills. This group accepts only BCBS and Cigna insurance.

About the facilitator

Audrey is also skilled in working with very young children, building on her six years as a pre-school teacher. Recognizing the importance of a multi-dimensional approach to therapy, Audrey utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Client Focused Therapy and Mindfulness to help clients to develop coping skills and strategies. By incorporating non-verbal stress reduction techniques as well as utilizing art based and play based modalities, she is able to help her clients foster a strong sense of self and awareness. Her knowledge of child development and expectations allows her to help children and parents gain the skills needed to foster independent and appropriate behaviors in the home and school environment.

Detailed group description

Middle school can be a mine field as young adolescents begin their transition into “teenagerhood”. Social media influences; changing friendships; physical changes; academic expectations… can all combine to impact a middle schooler’s sense of identity, self-esteem and behaviors. Join Sharon as she helps participants discover their strengths as well as their challenges. Using creative and interactive activities, the group will address topics including healthy relationships, positive decision making, problem solving, open communication and managing emotions and develop skills to use in their ever changing world.

young professionals and those between jobs

Detailed group description

Create a resume that stands out! COVID has altered the job market immeasurably. Established businesses have closed their doors while others have found success by changing their model or even becoming 100% remote. How does someone who is new to the job market get hired in 2021? Ryan will use his decades of experience reviewing resumes and interviewing staff in his role as Assistant Director of Beth Tfiloh Camps to assist workshop participants in writing a resume that stands out. This four-part series will give participants the opportunity to learn the ideal style of resume and cover letter that will attract the attention of the decision makers in the organizations hiring. Ryan will work with each participant to offer positive constructive feedback that will elicit a powerful resume and cover letter. Ryan will also offer participants pointers on successful interviewing techniques. An optional mock-interview is available on request. Note that insurance will not cover this group.

About the facilitator

Ryan has a unique perspective. For decades he worked with and supervised people from all walks of life. Ryan likes to work with young professionals to help provide guidance often missing from a classroom. Skills like resume writing are important life skills. Ryan will be able to provide feedback that a recruiter, HR representative, or interviewer might not share with an applicant. Ryan enjoys helping others be at their best.
